Crossing to Northern Cyprus: the practical guide
How do you cross to Northern Cyprus from the south?
Present your passport at any of nine official checkpoints. The crossing takes 5–20 minutes. Request a separate paper for the Northern Cyprus stamp. Buy temporary car insurance at the crossing (~€30 for your hire car). Enter Cyprus via Larnaca or Paphos airports first.
Political context: Northern Cyprus is administered by Turkey, recognized only by Turkey; the United Nations considers it occupied territory. Always enter Cyprus first via a Republic of Cyprus airport (Larnaca or Paphos). Do not enter Cyprus via Ercan Airport — the Republic of Cyprus considers this illegal entry.
Before you go: the three things to sort in advance
1. Your entry point to Cyprus. Always fly into Larnaca or Paphos. This is the Republic of Cyprus’s fundamental requirement for legal entry. Once you have entered the Republic of Cyprus, you can cross to the north and return freely. Entering via Ercan Airport in the north first, then crossing south, is considered illegal entry by the Republic of Cyprus and could result in difficulties.
2. Your hire car insurance. If you plan to drive across, your standard Republic of Cyprus hire car policy almost certainly does not cover Northern Cyprus. Purchase temporary TPL (Third Party Liability) insurance at the checkpoint — approximately €30. Some hire companies now sell a Northern Cyprus extension upfront — ask when booking. See our car hire guide.
3. Your cash. The north uses Turkish lira (TRY). Euros and GBP are accepted at most tourist businesses, but having some lira is useful for markets, petrol stations, and small shops. Withdraw from an ATM in Kyrenia or Famagusta on arrival. See Cyprus money guide.
The crossing process, step by step
Step 1: Approach the checkpoint
Drive to (or walk to) your chosen crossing. The nine crossings vary in their setup but share the same basic process. Vehicle crossings have lanes separated by type; pedestrian crossings have foot-passenger lanes.
Popular crossings:
- Ledra Street, Nicosia: Pedestrian only, central location, drops you into North Nicosia’s bazaar district.
- Agios Dometios, Nicosia: Vehicle crossing, most used by day-trip tours.
- Pergamos/Beyarmudu: Vehicle crossing east of Nicosia, best access route to Famagusta.
Step 2: Republic of Cyprus exit
The first checkpoint you encounter is the Republic of Cyprus police/immigration. Present your passport (or EU national ID for EU citizens). They will check your document and note your exit. This is typically quick — under 5 minutes.
Step 3: UN Buffer Zone
Cross the narrow strip of land managed by the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus. Follow the signs and road markings. Do not stop or photograph the UN installations.
Step 4: Northern Cyprus entry
Present your document to the Northern Cyprus immigration officers at their checkpoint. They will:
- Record your entry details.
- Ask if you want a stamp in your passport or on a separate paper.
Always request the separate paper stamp. The officer will print your entry details on a separate slip of paper, which is valid for your stay and serves as your entry record for the return crossing. This keeps your passport free of a Northern Cyprus stamp.
Step 5: Vehicle insurance desk (if driving)
Immediately after (or before) the immigration desk, there is an insurance office selling temporary Northern Cyprus vehicle insurance. If you are driving your hire car north, stop here and purchase TPL coverage. Show your vehicle rental documents and pay approximately €30. You will receive a certificate valid for the period of your crossing.
Step 6: Welcome to Northern Cyprus
You are now in the north. Drive or walk to your destination. Signage is in Turkish. Major tourist sites (Famagusta, Salamis, Kyrenia, St Hilarion) are well-signposted in English as well.
Returning south
The return process mirrors entry. At your chosen checkpoint:
- Northern Cyprus departure: present your passport and the separate paper entry stamp.
- UN Buffer Zone: cross as before.
- Republic of Cyprus entry: present your passport. Receive a Republic of Cyprus entry stamp.
The Republic of Cyprus does not object to citizens or visitors returning from the north — the crossing is routine and accepted.

Guided tours versus self-driving
Guided day trips: Multiple operators in Larnaca, Ayia Napa, Paphos, and Nicosia run day trips that handle the crossing, insurance, and logistics for you. The guide explains the political context and the history of each site. Recommended for first-time visitors who want context without planning effort.
From Larnaca: Famagusta and Salamis Tour From Kyrenia: Half-Day St. Hilarion Castle & Bellapais TourSelf-driving: More flexibility, lower cost for the day, but you manage the insurance and navigation yourself. Works well for repeat visitors or those who want to explore at their own pace.

How long does the crossing take?
At quiet times: 5–10 minutes total. At peak times (summer weekends at Ledra Street): 30–60 minutes. Pergamos vehicle crossing is generally faster than the Nicosia pedestrian crossing during busy periods.
Can EU citizens use their national ID card?
Yes — EU/EEA citizens can cross with a valid national ID card at the Republic of Cyprus checkpoint. Northern Cyprus accepts this too. Non-EU citizens must use their passport.
What is the northern Cyprus stamp problem?
A Northern Cyprus entry stamp in your passport is technically evidence of visiting territory that the Republic of Cyprus considers occupied. In practice, it causes no problems for Western travellers visiting EU countries, the UK, or most global destinations. A few countries with historical sensitivities related to Turkey or Cyprus might object in theory — but this is essentially hypothetical for most tourists. Request paper-only stamp to be safe.
Can I cross back and forth multiple times in one day?
Yes — there is no limit on the number of crossings. However, each crossing takes time, and multiple crossings in one day wastes significant travel time.
What if I left something in Northern Cyprus after crossing back south?
You can re-cross the same day if checkpoints are still open. Checkpoints generally close late at night (around 23:00–00:00) and reopen early morning. Ledra Street closes around midnight in summer.
