Cyprus in spring: why April and May are the island's finest months
Is spring the best time to visit Cyprus?
Yes — for most visitors, April and May offer the ideal conditions. Temperatures are warm but not oppressive (22–27°C), the sea is warming toward 22–23°C, wildflowers cover the hills, and crowds are moderate. Easter in Cyprus (Greek Orthodox calendar) is one of the most atmospheric cultural events on the island.
The time when Cyprus is at its most alive
If there is a single best month to visit Cyprus, it is probably May. The island in May has everything: wildflowers covering the hillsides in a riot of red, yellow, white, and blue; sea temperatures climbing through 22°C to swimming warmth; a pace of life that is animated and open without the oppressive density of high summer. The Troodos mountains in May are still green from the winter rains; the wine villages are fragrant with the flowering of the vines; and the archaeological sites are at their most beautiful — bright sun on warm limestone, the sea visible from the heights of Kourion.
April has its own character: the possibility of rain (particularly in early April), the extraordinary spectacle of Greek Orthodox Easter if the timing falls this month, and the spring wildflower season at its peak on the rocky hillsides of the Akamas Peninsula and the Troodos foothills.
Spring weather in Cyprus
March: Temperatures rising from winter levels (18–22°C daily high on the coast). Rain still possible, particularly on the west coast (Paphos). Sea temperature 17–19°C — cold for swimming but improving. The Troodos still has snow on the upper slopes through most of March.
April: Temperatures 22–25°C on the coast. Rain less frequent, typically brief showers. Sea temperature 19–21°C — wetsuits optional for committed swimmers. Wildflowers at peak on the hillsides and the Akamas Peninsula. Easter (Greek Orthodox) falls in March or April and is the most significant cultural event of the spring.
May: Temperatures 25–28°C on the coast. Sea temperature 22–24°C — fully comfortable for swimming. Very little rain. Crowds beginning to build toward summer levels but still manageable. The ideal month for combining beach, archaeology, and mountain exploration.
June: Transitional. Temperatures rising toward summer levels (30–34°C). Sea at 24–25°C. Early summer crowds arriving. Still excellent, but the beginning of the heat management requirements that peak in July–August.
Spring wildflowers
Cyprus has an exceptionally rich spring flora. The island’s limestone bedrock, the variety of micro-climates from sea level to 1,900 metres, and the relatively undisturbed character of many rural areas support over 1,800 plant species, including 140+ endemic species found nowhere else in the world.
What to look for:
- Anemones: Brilliant scarlet Anemone coronaria covers the hillsides of the Akamas Peninsula and the Troodos foothills in February–March, earlier than most other flowers.
- Orchids: Cyprus has over 50 orchid species, including several endemics. The peak orchid season is March–April; the Akamas Peninsula, the slopes of the Troodos, and the Xeros Valley near Paphos are the best locations.
- Cistus: The rock rose (cistus) covers the lower Troodos slopes and the Akamas in waves of white and pink flowers in April–May.
- Cyprus cyclamen: The endemic Cyprus cyclamen (Cyclamen cyprium) flowers in autumn but is distinctive throughout the year on rocky limestone areas.
- Poppies: Red poppies fill cultivated fields and roadsides in April, particularly in the Nicosia plain and the farming areas around Larnaca.
The Akamas Peninsula National Park is the premier wildflower destination in Cyprus in spring. A walk on the coastal path from Lara Beach north toward the Baths of Aphrodite in late April passes through a remarkable density of flowering species.
Greek Orthodox Easter in Cyprus
Greek Orthodox Easter (Pascha) is the most important religious and cultural event in the Cypriot year. The date varies according to the Orthodox calendar (usually 1–5 weeks after Western Easter, though sometimes coinciding) and can fall anywhere between late March and early May.
Holy Week events:
Good Friday (Megali Paraskevi): The most solemn day of the Orthodox year. Evening processions in every village and city carry the Epitaphios — an elaborately decorated bier representing the body of Christ, covered in flowers — through the streets accompanied by the church choir and candles. The largest and most impressive processions are in Nicosia (several major churches), Limassol, and Paphos. The atmosphere is genuinely moving even for non-Orthodox observers.
Holy Saturday midnight: The Resurrection service (Anastasi) is the emotional peak of the Orthodox year. Just before midnight, all lights in the church are extinguished. At the stroke of midnight, the priest emerges from the altar with a single flame (“Christ is risen!” — Christos Anesti) and passes the flame from candle to candle through the packed congregation. The candlelit church, the sound of the choir, and the crowds who then process out into the night with candles lit is one of the most atmospheric events in Mediterranean Christianity.
Easter Sunday: Family gathering day. The traditional Easter meal is magiritsa (lamb offal soup) at midnight after the Resurrection service, then lamb on the spit (souvla) or in the oven (kleftiko) on Sunday.
If your visit coincides with Greek Orthodox Easter (check the date for the year of your travel), attending a Holy Saturday midnight service — in any village or city church — is strongly recommended. You don’t need to be Orthodox or Christian to observe respectfully.
Spring hiking
Spring is the best hiking season in Cyprus. The Troodos trail network is accessible from April (the main trails are clear of snow) and the temperature is ideal for hiking — 18–24°C in the mountains, with the sun lower and less intense than summer.
Best spring hikes:
- Caledonia Trail (Troodos): 2 km each way along the Kryos river to a 12-metre waterfall. Beautiful in spring with the river running full.
- Aphrodite Trail (Akamas): 7 km coastal route from the Baths of Aphrodite to Cape Arnaoutis. April is the best month for this trail — wildflowers throughout, temperatures ideal, no summer heat.
- Atalante Trail (Troodos summit area): 14 km circular route through the pine forests of the summit zone. Best April–May before the summer heat.
- Artemis Trail (Troodos): 9 km circular route at the highest elevation of the Troodos main trails. Snow-free by April, spectacular views.

From Paphos: Troodos Mountains & Villages Guided Day TripSpring and the Troodos wine villages
April–May is the early season for wine tourism in the Troodos foothills. The vines are just beginning their new growth cycle after winter pruning; the landscape is bright green rather than the yellow-gold of summer. Most wineries are open for tastings and the welcome is particularly warm when the tourist season has not yet peaked.
Omodos, Arsos, Kilani, and Koilani are the most rewarding wine village destinations in spring. See our Cyprus traditional villages guide.
Cyprus: Troodos Mountain Wine Tour with a LocalSwimming in spring
The sea temperature in April (19–21°C) is at the lower end of comfortable for most European swimmers without a wetsuit. By May (22–23°C), most visitors swim comfortably. The water clarity in spring is exceptional — winter rainfall has not increased turbidity, and the summer algae growth has not yet begun.
The beaches in spring are gloriously quiet. Konnos Bay in May, with no sunbed rental pressure and the water clear to the bottom — this is the beach experience that summer visitors queue for and spring visitors simply walk into.
Frequently asked questions about Cyprus in spring
When exactly is the best time to visit Cyprus for wildflowers?
Peak wildflower season is mid-March through April on the coast and lower slopes; April through early May for higher elevations in the Troodos. If orchids specifically are your interest, early to mid-April in the Akamas and Troodos foothills is optimal.
Is the sea warm enough to swim in April?
19–21°C in April — borderline for most swimmers. With a 3mm wetsuit it is perfectly comfortable. Without a wetsuit, a 10–15 minute swim is feasible for most people; extended swimming requires some cold tolerance. By May, no wetsuit is needed for most swimmers.
Are all sites and hotels open in April and May?
Yes — April–May is the standard beginning of the tourist season, and all sites, most hotels, and essentially all restaurants are open. Some beach facilities (sunbeds, beach bars) may not operate until May. The resort hotels of Ayia Napa and Protaras reopen April–May after the winter closure.
How crowded are the beaches in May?
May is busy (the early season has begun) but not at the saturation level of July–August. Popular beaches like Nissi Beach and Fig Tree Bay will have people but not the wall-to-wall density of peak summer. Konnos Bay and Pissouri Bay in May are delightfully uncrowded.
Is spring better than autumn for visiting Cyprus?
Both spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are excellent and comparable. Spring has the wildflowers and the cultural intensity of Easter; autumn has the grape harvest, the wine festival atmosphere, and warm sea temperatures that have built up all summer. Choose based on which of these specific advantages appeals most. Temperatures are broadly similar in both periods.
