Cyprus itinerary: the best routes for 5, 7, and 14 days

What is the best itinerary for Cyprus?

For 7 days: 2 days Paphos (mosaics, coast), 1 day Troodos (Kykkos, villages), 1 day Limassol (Kourion, old town), 1 day Larnaca (coast, Choirokoitia), 1 day Nicosia (museums, crossing), 1 day Ayia Napa/Cape Greco (beach). A car is essential for everything except a Nicosia or Ayia Napa base.

Planning a Cyprus trip from scratch

Cyprus rewards travellers who resist the impulse to stay in one resort zone for their entire visit. The island is small enough (240 km east to west) that a car allows you to experience beaches, mountains, ancient sites, and cities in a single week without excessive driving. A well-planned 7-day itinerary can cover the full range of what Cyprus offers. A 14-day trip can do it in depth, with time for spontaneous detours and slower exploration.

This guide offers three complete itineraries: 5 days (the minimum to see the essentials), 7 days (the ideal first visit), and 14 days (for those who want depth rather than coverage).

5-day Cyprus itinerary

A 5-day trip requires choices. The best 5-day structure concentrates on the western and central island — Paphos and the coast, Troodos mountains, and Limassol — with a single day for Nicosia. This misses Ayia Napa and the east coast, which can be saved for a return visit.

Day 1 — Paphos: the archaeological heart

Arrive at Paphos Airport or Larnaca (transfer to Paphos). Settle in and walk to Kato Paphos harbour for dinner — the area around the harbour has reasonable restaurants once you leave the immediate tourist strip. The Tombs of the Kings, visible from the cliff road, provide a dramatic backdrop for evening drinks at the harbour.

Day 2 — Paphos: mosaics, coast, and Aphrodite

  • Morning: Paphos Archaeological Park (floor mosaics, 2 hours).
  • Late morning: Tombs of the Kings (45 minutes).
  • Afternoon: drive east to Petra tou Romiou — swim and sunset. See our Petra tou Romiou guide.
Paphos: Half-Day City Tour with Tombs of the Kings Entry

Day 3 — Troodos mountains

  • Drive north from Paphos via the wine villages (Kathikas, Drousia).
  • Kykkos Monastery (90 minutes).
  • Omodos village: lunch, wine tasting.
  • Return to Limassol base (or continue in Paphos).

Day 4 — Kourion and Limassol

  • Kourion Archaeological Site (2 hours).
  • Apollo Hylates Sanctuary (45 minutes).
  • Limassol old town and medieval castle (afternoon).
  • Dinner in Limassol old town.

Day 5 — Nicosia and home

  • Nicosia: Cyprus Museum (2 hours) + old town + Ledra Street crossing (4–5 hours total).
  • Transfer to airport for evening departure.

7-day Cyprus itinerary

Seven days is the ideal first-visit duration — enough to cover the major highlights of every region without feeling rushed.

Days 1–2: Paphos

As above for the 5-day version. Add a half-day drive north to the Akamas Peninsula — the Baths of Aphrodite, Latchi harbour, and lunch by the sea. See our Blue Lagoon Akamas guide.

Day 3: Troodos

As above. For a 7-day version, add the Caledonia Waterfall Trail and a stop in Platres for trout lunch.

Day 4: Limassol

Kourion + Kolossi + Limassol old town. A longer engagement with Limassol is worthwhile: the archaeological museum, the medieval castle, and the lively Saripolou Square area in the old town. Evening: Limassol marina waterfront.

Day 5: Larnaca

Drive east to Larnaca (50 minutes). Morning: Choirokoitia UNESCO Neolithic site. Lunch: Lefkara village. See our Lefkara guide. Afternoon: Larnaca city — St Lazarus Church, Finikoudes promenade, Mackenzie Beach fish dinner.

Larnaca: Lefkara Lace, Choirokoitia, and Birdwatching Tour

Day 6: Nicosia

Full day in the divided capital: Cyprus Museum, Byzantine Museum, Ledra Street crossing, North Nicosia (Büyük Han, covered market, Selimiye Mosque). Lunch in the old town. See our divided Nicosia walking guide.

Day 7: Ayia Napa and Cape Greco

Drive east from Larnaca (45 minutes) or Nicosia (75 minutes). Morning swim at Konnos Bay. Cape Greco coastal walk (2 hours). Lunch in Ayia Napa. Boat tour from Ayia Napa harbour in the afternoon. Transfer to airport.

14-day Cyprus itinerary

A 14-day itinerary has the luxury of depth — you can spend more time in places that deserve it, make spontaneous detours, include Northern Cyprus properly, and see the island in its seasonal rhythms rather than as a series of ticked boxes.

Days 1–3: Paphos region

  • Day 1: Paphos city (Archaeological Park, harbour, old town).
  • Day 2: Akamas Peninsula — Baths of Aphrodite, Blue Lagoon boat trip, Latchi harbour.
  • Day 3: Paphos wine country — Emba, Stroumbi, Kathikas villages; winery visits.

Days 4–5: Western Troodos and Kykkos

  • Day 4: Drive north to Kykkos Monastery via Pano Panayia; Cedar Valley; Pedoulas village.
  • Day 5: Explore southern Troodos — Caledonia trail, Platres, Omodos.

Days 6–7: Limassol

  • Day 6: Kourion, Apollo Hylates, Kolossi. Dinner in Limassol old town.
  • Day 7: Limassol city — castle, municipal market, Columbia beach east. Evening: Limassol marina.

Days 8–9: Larnaca and hinterland

  • Day 8: Choirokoitia, Lefkara, Larnaca city.
  • Day 9: Drive the Larnaca Salt Lake circuit; Hala Sultan Tekke; Kition archaeological site; Mackenzie Beach afternoon.

Days 10–11: Nicosia

  • Day 10: Cyprus Museum, Byzantine Museum, Chrysaliniotissa neighbourhood.
  • Day 11: Full Green Line crossing day — North Nicosia (Büyük Han, Selimiye, market) and drive to Kyrenia.

Days 12–13: Northern Cyprus

Note: Northern Cyprus is administered by Turkey, recognised only by Turkey. See our Northern Cyprus guide.

  • Day 12: Kyrenia harbour, castle, St Hilarion Castle, Bellapais Abbey.
  • Day 13: Famagusta — walled city, Cathedral/Mosque, Salamis ancient ruins.

Day 14: Ayia Napa and Cape Greco

Final day: Cape Greco National Park — Konnos Bay swim and boat trip before transfer to Larnaca Airport.

Practical planning notes

Car rental: A car is essential for all three itineraries. Book early (especially for summer). All major rental companies operate at both airports.

Base hotels: The 7-day itinerary above uses multiple bases (Paphos, Limassol/Larnaca area). An alternative approach is a single central base (Limassol is the most central) with day trips in all directions.

Driving time budgets: Add 25% to any Google Maps estimate for Cyprus mountain driving. Troodos roads are narrow and winding; what appears to be a 45-minute journey may take 60 minutes.

Booking: The Paphos Archaeological Park and Kourion do not require advance booking but have limited shade — arrive early in summer. The Kykkos Monastery museum occasionally has timed entry; check ahead in peak season.

Frequently asked questions about Cyprus itineraries

Is 5 days enough for Cyprus?

Five days is enough to see the essential highlights of the western and central island: Paphos, Troodos, Kourion, and Nicosia. You will not have time for the east coast (Ayia Napa, Cape Greco, Protaras) or Northern Cyprus on a 5-day trip — save these for a return visit.

Should I base in one hotel or move around?

Moving around — staying 2 nights in Paphos, 1–2 nights in Limassol/Larnaca, 1 night in Nicosia — gives the most efficient use of time and eliminates long driving days from a single base. The trade-off is the overhead of packing and unpacking. A single central base (Limassol) with daily excursions is simpler but involves more driving.

Can I do Cyprus without a car?

For the resorts and the main archaeological parks (Paphos, Kourion), it is possible with taxis and buses. For any itinerary that includes the Troodos, Lefkara, Choirokoitia, and the rural interior, a car is essential. See our public transport guide.

What is the best base for a 7-day trip?

For maximum day-trip flexibility: Limassol (central, good road access to all regions). For beach focus: Paphos (best range of activities, interesting city to explore). For archaeology: Paphos or Larnaca. For a mix of beach and culture: Limassol or Larnaca.

Is Northern Cyprus worth including in a 7-day itinerary?

Yes, if you have the time and interest. A day trip to Famagusta and Salamis from Larnaca (Day 5 or 6 of the 7-day itinerary) adds the most historically significant medieval sites in Cyprus to your visit. A full day in Kyrenia requires replacing another destination on the itinerary. See our day trip to Northern Cyprus guide.
