When to visit Cyprus: month-by-month guide

When is the best time to visit Cyprus?

April–June is the best overall: warm sea (20–24°C), no extreme heat, lower prices than peak season, and the island is green and flowering. September–October is the second-best window. July–August is hottest, most crowded, and most expensive but best for beach swimming.

Why the timing of your Cyprus trip matters more than you think

Cyprus is a 12-month destination with dramatically different experiences depending on when you visit. The same island that swelters at 40°C in Nicosia in August becomes an extraordinary wildflower landscape in March and April. The beaches that are shoulder-to-shoulder in July are practically empty in May. The Troodos mountains, often overlooked in summer when visitors are beach-focused, come alive in spring with the scent of pine and the colour of endemic orchids — and in winter occasionally receive enough snow for skiing on Mount Olympus.

This guide is deliberately detailed. If you want a one-line answer: April, May, or October. If you want the full picture — read on.

Month-by-month breakdown

January

Weather: Mild on the coast (14–18°C), cold in the mountains (0–8°C). Rain is possible throughout, concentrated on the west coast around Paphos. Snow on Troodos (Mount Olympus, 1,952 m) is possible.

Sea temperature: 17–18°C — cold for most swimmers.

Crowds: Minimal. Hotels offer rock-bottom winter prices. Limassol and Paphos offer peaceful out-of-season atmospheres.

Special: Ski season on Troodos (weather permitting — the Cyprus Ski Club operates lifts when snowfall is sufficient, typically January–March). Green valleys and dramatic coastal light. Great for photography.

Avoid if: You need guaranteed sunshine, warm swimming, or full attraction hours.

February

Similar to January. Almond trees blossom across the island from late February — a spectacle around Paphos district villages. The first wildflowers appear (anemones, cyclamens). Limassol Carnival typically falls in February/early March — three weeks of parades, masks, and the famous Saturday Grand Parade.

March

Weather: Warming noticeably. Coastal temperatures reach 18–22°C. The interior is green and lush. Rain decreases through the month.

Sea temperature: 17–19°C — still cool but the first brave swimmers appear.

Highlights: The island is in full spring wildflower mode — orchids in Akamas, anemones across the Troodos foothills, Cistus in the limestone hills. Birdwatching season begins (Cyprus is on a major Mediterranean migration route).

Good for: Walking, cycling, archaeological sites without crowds or heat, photography.

April

Weather: 22–26°C on the coast. The best month for walking and hiking. Mount Olympus is often still snowy in early April.

Sea temperature: 19–21°C — the first proper swimming weather for hardy visitors.

Crowds: Low to moderate. Easter (Orthodox Easter, date varies) brings Cypriots home from abroad — book accommodation if your visit coincides.

Why it is excellent: The combination of warm days, cool evenings, flowering landscape, no crowds, and reasonable prices makes April one of the best months overall. Attractions are open but not overwhelmed.

May

Weather: 24–28°C. Long sunny days with low humidity. Sea temperature reaching 22°C.

Sea temperature: 21–23°C — genuinely comfortable swimming.

Crowds: Moderate. European half-term holidays bring families in mid-May.

Why it is excellent: Arguably the best beach month for those who want warmth without crowds. Water is warm enough for extended swimming. Paphos and Limassol are enjoyable without resort-season pricing. The Akamas is still green.

June

Weather: 28–33°C on the coast. Nicosia begins to feel hot (32–36°C). Troodos remains comfortable (22–26°C).

Sea temperature: 24–26°C — excellent.

Crowds: Building toward peak season. Prices rise.

Best for: Beach holidays that feel genuine rather than overwhelmed. Early June is arguably the sweet spot of the year — warm water, manageable crowds, full activity schedules.

July

Weather: 32–38°C on the coast. Nicosia reaches 40°C or more on peak days. Troodos is 24–28°C — significantly cooler.

Sea temperature: 26–27°C — peak warmth.

Crowds: High season. Prices at maximum. Nissi Beach, Fig Tree Bay, and Coral Bay are packed by mid-morning.

Best for: Pure beach holidays, water sports, catamaran cruises, and nightlife (Ayia Napa). Not good for ruins or walking in the midday heat.

Avoid: Walking archaeological sites in the middle of the day. Nicosia in July is genuinely unpleasant — 40°C on streets without sea breeze.

August

Similar to July — marginally hotter inland. Peak of the season. Paphos Aphrodite Opera Festival takes place in the ancient harbour theatre in late August/early September.

Key events: Limassol Wine Festival (late August/early September), Paphos Aphrodite Festival (early September).

September

Weather: 30–34°C early, dropping to 26–28°C by month’s end. Humidity decreases.

Sea temperature: 26–28°C — still warm and excellent for swimming.

Crowds: Sharply declining after mid-August. Prices drop noticeably.

Why it is excellent: September may be the best month of all for combining beach with culture. Water is at its warmest of the year (the sea stores August’s heat), crowds have thinned, prices fall, and the island is not the sauna it can be in August.

Harvest season: Grape harvest (vendange) in the wine villages from late August through September. Visiting the wine route during harvest is a unique experience — see our Cyprus wine guide.

October

Weather: 24–28°C early, 20–24°C by month’s end. Rain possible from mid-October on the west coast.

Sea temperature: 23–25°C — still warm through the month.

Crowds: Low. Resort hotels begin closing from mid-October.

Best for: Cultural touring, archaeology (Paphos, Kourion), walking, wine routes. Some village tavernas start closing for winter in late October.

November

Weather: 18–22°C. Increased rain risk. Some beach and resort facilities close.

Sea temperature: 21–22°C — swimming is possible but not comfortable for most.

Character: The island transitions to its quieter winter self. Nicosia and Limassol remain lively with resident populations. Village tavernas in Troodos begin closing (many do not reopen until March).

December

Weather: 15–19°C on the coast. Cold, possibly wet. Festive atmosphere in Limassol and Paphos.

Sea temperature: 18–19°C.

Special: Christmas is celebrated enthusiastically. Some hotels offer Christmas packages. Nicosia decorates its old town attractively.

Frequently asked questions about the best time to visit Cyprus

Is Cyprus good for a winter holiday?

Yes for a city break or cultural tour — Limassol, Nicosia, and Paphos are pleasant in winter with mild temperatures, no crowds, and excellent restaurant scenes. Not good for beach swimming (water is cold), and some tourist facilities close.

What is the worst month to visit Cyprus?

There is no truly bad month, but August in Nicosia is brutally hot (40°C+), and peak-season crowds and prices make July–August the least comfortable for everything except beach holidays.

Does it rain much in Cyprus?

Rainfall is concentrated in November–February, primarily on the west coast. Most summer months are completely dry. Cyprus receives less rainfall than most southern European destinations — rain during a beach holiday is very unlikely from May through October.

Can you ski in Cyprus?

Yes — the Cyprus Ski Club operates two drag lifts on Mount Olympus in the Troodos range, at about 1,900 metres. The season typically runs January–March when snowfall is sufficient, which is not every year. Snow cover is unreliable. Skiing in Cyprus is a novelty experience rather than a destination ski holiday.

When are hotels cheapest in Cyprus?

November through March offers the lowest rates — often 40–60 percent below summer peaks. April, May, and October offer a good balance of value and weather. July–August commands the highest prices, especially for beach-front hotels.

What are the school holiday periods in Cyprus?

Cypriot school holidays run roughly from mid-June to early September, with shorter breaks at Christmas and Easter. UK school holidays (particularly July–August) create the highest hotel demand at beach resorts.
