Day trips from Limassol: the best excursions in every direction

What are the best day trips from Limassol?

Kourion and the coast west (archaeological day), Troodos mountains with Kykkos monastery, Paphos (mosaics, harbour, Petra tou Romiou), and Nicosia (divided capital). All are under 90 minutes drive. A day trip to Famagusta and Salamis in Northern Cyprus adds a full cross-line adventure.

Limassol as a day-trip base

Limassol’s position at the centre of the island’s southern coast makes it one of the best bases for day-trip exploration in Cyprus. Within 90 minutes’ drive, you can reach the Paphos archaeological zone to the west, the Troodos summit to the north, Nicosia to the northeast, and the Larnaca-Ayia Napa coast to the east. Famagusta and Salamis in Northern Cyprus, accessible via the crossing from the south, are achievable in a full day.

The city itself deserves a half-day or full day separately — the old town and the marina, the castle, and the medieval quarter are genuinely worth exploring. But the day-trip radius from Limassol is exceptional, and a one-week stay based here can cover most of the island’s highlights.

Day trip 1: Kourion and the western coast (30–35 km, 35 minutes)

The most popular and most rewarding half-day trip from Limassol follows the B6 coastal road westward through Episkopi to Kourion — the most visually dramatic archaeological site in Cyprus. The Roman theatre on the cliff edge, the mosaics of the House of Eustolios and the House of Achilles, and the panoramic sea views make Kourion the single site most worth prioritising if you have limited time.

From Kourion, the obvious extension is the Sanctuary of Apollo Hylates (3 km further west — see our Apollo Hylates guide) and Kolossi Castle (another 10 km east toward Limassol). The three sites together make a satisfying archaeological half-day.

For a full day, continue west from Kourion to Pissouri Bay (swim and lunch) and then to Petra tou Romiou — the mythological birthplace of Aphrodite. See our Petra tou Romiou guide.

Day trip 2: Troodos mountains and Kykkos Monastery (80–100 km, 1.5 hours)

The Troodos mountains are the most accessible highland in Cyprus from Limassol — the main road north from the city reaches the plateau at 1,200–1,400 metres within 90 minutes. The highest point, Mount Olympus (1,952 metres), is the apex of Cyprus.

A focused Troodos day from Limassol might include:

  • Platres: the main resort village on the southern Troodos slopes, with a pleasant pedestrian area and several good tavernas.
  • Caledonia Waterfall Trail: the most famous of the Troodos walking trails, a 2 km (one way) path through pine forest along the Kryos river to a 12-metre waterfall. Moderate difficulty.
  • Kykkos Monastery: the most important monastery in Cyprus, at 1,140 metres. Allow 90 minutes for the monastery and museum.
  • Omodos village: on the return route — wine tasting, cobbled streets, the monastery of the Holy Cross.

The total driving distance for this circuit from Limassol is approximately 160–180 km. Start by 08:00 to complete everything comfortably.

Day trip 3: Paphos (60 km, 55 minutes via motorway)

Paphos deserves its own day from Limassol — a focused exploration of the archaeological zone and the harbour area, with time for Petra tou Romiou on the return. The primary stops:

  • Paphos Archaeological Park (UNESCO): the floor mosaics of the Houses of Dionysus, Theseus, and Aion are the primary attraction — plan 2–2.5 hours.
  • Tombs of the Kings: the monumental Ptolemaic necropolis north of the harbour, 30 minutes minimum.
  • Paphos harbour: the medieval castle, the fishing harbour, and the surrounding café and restaurant area.
  • Petra tou Romiou: on the B6 coastal road between Paphos and Limassol, a natural stop on the return.

Drive time: 55 minutes from Limassol on the A1/A6 motorway. The coastal B6 road (old route) is slower but more scenic and passes Pissouri and Kourion.

Day trip 4: Nicosia — the divided capital (80 km, 45–55 minutes)

Nicosia is the most culturally stimulating day trip from Limassol — a full day in the divided capital covers the Cyprus Museum (national archaeological collection), the Byzantine Museum and Archbishop’s Palace quarter, a walk through the Venetian old town, and a crossing of the Ledra Street checkpoint into North Nicosia.

The Green Line crossing takes 5–10 minutes; North Nicosia is walkable and very different in character from the south — Ottoman architecture, covered market, lower prices. A full crossing day from Limassol requires an early start (leave by 08:00) to have adequate time in both sides of the city.

See our divided Nicosia walking guide for the detailed itinerary.

Day trip 5: Larnaca, Lefkara, and Choirokoitia (80–100 km, 50–70 minutes)

The eastern day trip from Limassol runs through the Larnaca hinterland, with stops at:

  • Choirokoitia: UNESCO Neolithic settlement (40 minutes from Limassol).
  • Lefkara: the lace village — allow 2 hours for the museum, shopping, and lunch. See our Lefkara guide.
  • Larnaca: if time allows — St Lazarus Church, Finikoudes promenade, Hala Sultan Tekke.

The combination of Choirokoitia and Lefkara fills a comfortable half-day and returns you to Limassol by early afternoon. Adding Larnaca city extends it to a full day.

Day trip 6: Northern Cyprus — Famagusta and Kyrenia (120–140 km, 90 minutes to crossing)

Note: Northern Cyprus is administered by Turkey, recognised only by Turkey. Enter via Republic of Cyprus airports and cross the Green Line. See our crossing guide.

A full day combining Famagusta (the medieval walled city and Salamis ancient ruins) with Kyrenia (the harbour and castle) is achievable from Limassol, but requires very early departure (06:30–07:00) and efficient use of time. The crossing adds 30–45 minutes in each direction.

The alternative — and usually more satisfying — approach is an organised day trip with a guide who navigates the logistics. These typically cover Famagusta (Venetian walls, Cathedral/Mosque, Varosha seafront) and Salamis in the morning, with Kyrenia harbour for lunch and the afternoon.

Practical advice for day trips from Limassol

Car rental: A car is strongly recommended for the freedom to move between sites at your own pace. See our renting a car guide for Limassol-specific advice. Rental agencies are concentrated around the old port area.

Petrol: Fill up before heading to the Troodos mountains — there are very limited petrol stations above 700 metres.

Starting time: Cyprus gets hot in summer (July–August: 35–40°C inland). Start outdoor archaeological site visits before 10:00. Plan to be inside, at a taverna, or in the car between 13:00 and 16:00. Resume in the afternoon.

Organised tours: For Northern Cyprus and for Troodos tours that include multiple sites with guiding context, the organised options provide genuine added value.

Frequently asked questions about day trips from Limassol

What is the single best day trip from Limassol?

For most visitors: the western coastal route — Kourion, Apollo Hylates, Kolossi, lunch in Pissouri, Petra tou Romiou — gives the best combination of archaeological significance, coastal beauty, and Cypriot atmosphere. For culture enthusiasts: Nicosia with a Green Line crossing. For mountain lovers: Troodos with Kykkos and Omodos.

Can I do Paphos and Kourion in the same day from Limassol?

Yes, but it requires very efficient timing. Start at Kourion (22 km, 25 minutes from Limassol) at 08:30. Allow 2 hours for Kourion and Hylates. Drive to Paphos (40 km from Kourion). Spend 2 hours at the Archaeological Park mosaics and 1 hour at the Tombs of the Kings. Lunch in Paphos. Return via B6 coastal road with a Petra tou Romiou stop. Total distance: approximately 170 km. This is a full, tiring day — enjoyable if you move efficiently.

Is there public transport for day trips from Limassol?

OSEA buses connect Limassol to Paphos, Nicosia, Larnaca, and some Troodos villages. The service is frequent enough for the main cities (every 60–90 minutes) but restricts your flexibility significantly. For Kourion, Kolossi, and the western coastal sites, public transport is impractical.

What is the best season for day trips from Limassol?

April–June and September–October are ideal. The heat is manageable, the roads are not congested, and the archaeological sites are beautiful in the spring/autumn light. July–August are viable but require very early starts and careful heat management. November–March are excellent for Limassol city and coastal sites; the Troodos requires checking road conditions.

Can I visit the Karpaz Peninsula as a day trip from Limassol?

This is a long day — 170 km to the crossing plus 80+ km into Northern Cyprus to reach the peninsula tip. It is achievable as a very early start day trip, but most travellers who want to see Karpaz spend at least one night in the north. See our Karpaz Peninsula guide.
