Day trips from Larnaca: the best excursions from Cyprus's main airport city
What are the best day trips from Larnaca?
Ayia Napa and Cape Greco (45 km east), Nicosia (45 km north), Lefkara and Choirokoitia (40 km west), and Limassol (80 km west) are the top options. Famagusta and Salamis in Northern Cyprus can be reached in about 90 minutes via the Pergamos crossing.
Larnaca as a day-trip base
Most visitors to Cyprus land at Larnaca Airport and many of them think of Larnaca purely as a transit point — somewhere to spend the first and last nights before transferring to a resort. This misses the point. Larnaca is an excellent base in its own right, with day-trip access to more of the island’s highlights than any other city.
From Larnaca, you can reach:
- Ayia Napa and Cape Greco in 45 minutes — the island’s best beach-and-coastal-park combination.
- Nicosia in 35 minutes — the divided capital.
- Lefkara and Choirokoitia in 40 minutes — the lace village and the UNESCO Neolithic site.
- Limassol in 50 minutes — the island’s cosmopolitan hub.
- Famagusta and Salamis in 80–90 minutes (including the crossing into Northern Cyprus).
A week based in Larnaca, with a car, can cover the full island.
Day trip 1: Ayia Napa, Cape Greco, and Protaras (45–55 km, 40–50 minutes)
The east-coast day is the most obvious from Larnaca — the A3 motorway runs directly east and delivers you to Ayia Napa in 40 minutes. The day can be structured in multiple ways depending on interest:
Beach focus: Ayia Napa beaches (Nissi Beach or Sandy Bay) in the morning, Cape Greco sea caves and the Konnos Bay afternoon swim. See our Konnos Bay guide.
Activity focus: Morning boat tour from Ayia Napa harbour (Blue Lagoon and sea caves), lunch in Ayia Napa, afternoon exploration of Cape Greco national park on foot.
Protaras alternative: Fig Tree Bay is the most beautiful conventional beach in the Famagusta south area — a Blue Flag sandy beach with crystal-clear water that works for families. See our Fig Tree Bay guide.
Ayia Napa: Blue Lagoon & Turtle Cruise with Optional LunchDay trip 2: Nicosia — the divided capital (45 km, 35 minutes)
Nicosia is the most historically and culturally interesting day trip from Larnaca. The A2 motorway connects the two cities in under 40 minutes — making Nicosia one of the most accessible capital cities from any Mediterranean coastal resort area.
A full Nicosia day includes the Cyprus Museum, the Byzantine Museum, the Venetian old town, and the Ledra Street crossing into North Nicosia. See our divided Nicosia walking guide for the detailed itinerary.
Timing note: If you are combining Nicosia with a Green Line crossing into the north, plan 6–7 hours in the city. If you want only the south-side highlights (Cyprus Museum plus old town), 4 hours is sufficient.
Larnaca: Lefkara Lace, Choirokoitia, and Birdwatching TourDay trip 3: Lefkara and Choirokoitia (38–50 km, 40–50 minutes)
The most rewarding cultural-historical day trip in the Larnaca hinterland combines two UNESCO-listed sites that happen to be on the same road, 10 km apart.
Choirokoitia first (38 km from Larnaca, 40 minutes): the Neolithic village dating to 6,200 BC. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the site and the small museum. The reconstructed houses give an excellent sense of how this early community lived.
Lefkara second (48 km from Larnaca, 48 minutes): the lace village. Allow 2–2.5 hours for the Museum of Traditional Embroidery and Silversmithing, shopping in the traditional craft shops, and lunch at one of the village tavernas. See our full Lefkara guide.
The combination fills a comfortable full morning and early afternoon, returning to Larnaca by 15:00.
Extension to Limassol: from Lefkara, Limassol is 45 km west (45 minutes). You can extend the day to include Kolossi Castle and the Limassol old town if you have the energy.
Day trip 4: Limassol and the western coast (80 km, 50–60 minutes)
Limassol makes an excellent full-day destination from Larnaca. The most rewarding approach is to drive straight to Kourion (80 km from Larnaca via the A2/A1 motorways — about 1 hour) and then work eastward back toward Larnaca:
- Kourion (1.5–2 hours)
- Apollo Hylates Sanctuary (45 minutes)
- Limassol old town and marina (2 hours)
- Return to Larnaca.
Alternatively, stop in Larnaca’s own attractions in the morning before driving to Limassol: the Church of St Lazarus, the Kition excavation, the Larnaca Salt Lake for flamingos.
FROM PAPHOS: Island Roundtrip (Lefkara, Nicosia, Larnaca)Day trip 5: Northern Cyprus — Famagusta and Salamis (80–90 km to crossing, then 30 km further)
Note: Northern Cyprus is administered by Turkey, recognised only by Turkey. See our crossing guide.
Larnaca is the closest major southern city to the Pergamos crossing point — the standard vehicle checkpoint for travel between the Larnaca/Ayia Napa area and Northern Cyprus’s Famagusta district. From Larnaca city, the Pergamos crossing is approximately 45 km east along the motorway toward Ayia Napa, then north.
From the crossing, Famagusta (Gazimağusa) is approximately 30 km and 30 minutes. Salamis ancient ruins are 8 km north of Famagusta. A focused Famagusta and Salamis day is entirely feasible from Larnaca, leaving by 08:00 and returning by 18:00.
For a more ambitious day including Kyrenia, leave by 07:00 — Kyrenia is 80 km from the crossing (about 75 minutes on Northern Cyprus roads) and requires careful timing to include everything.
Ayia Napa/Protaras/Larnaka: Famagusta and Salamis Day TripDay trip 6: The Larnaca to Paphos roundtrip via Troodos and Nicosia
An ambitious full-island circuit that works best as an organised tour with a driver:
- Larnaca → Nicosia (North and South, morning)
- Nicosia → Kykkos Monastery via mountain road
- Kykkos → Paphos via Troodos villages
- Return Paphos → Larnaca via A6/A1 motorway
This is approximately 350 km of driving — feasible with an early start, but exhausting if you want to do justice to every stop. The better approach is to split this into separate day trips.
FROM PAPHOS: Island Roundtrip (Lefkara, Nicosia, Larnaca)Getting around from Larnaca
Car rental: Larnaca Airport has all major international rental agencies and several reliable local companies. Rates are competitive, especially for early booking. See our renting a car guide.
Airport transfers: For day-trip logistics, having a car from the airport is far more practical than Larnaca city pick-up. See our Larnaca airport guide for the full logistics.
Bus: OSEA and intercity buses connect Larnaca to Nicosia (frequent), Limassol, and Paphos. Useful for Nicosia day trips without a car; impractical for most other destinations.
Larnaca: Private Transfer to/from Larnaca Airport (LCA)Frequently asked questions about day trips from Larnaca
Is Larnaca a better base than Ayia Napa for day trips?
For day-trip diversity: yes. Larnaca is more centrally positioned and has better road access to Nicosia, Limassol, and the Troodos hinterland. Ayia Napa is closer to the best beaches and has a more concentrated resort offer. Larnaca is better for explorers; Ayia Napa is better for beach-focused visitors.
Can I do Ayia Napa and Protaras in the same day from Larnaca?
Yes, easily — they are on the same road, 10 km apart, and both are within 55 km of Larnaca. An east-coast day starting in Ayia Napa, crossing through Cape Greco, and spending the afternoon at Protaras (Fig Tree Bay or Konnos Bay) is a very satisfying circuit.
What is the earliest I can cross into Northern Cyprus at the Pergamos crossing?
The Pergamos checkpoint is open 24 hours. For a day trip, crossing before 08:30 gives you the best chance of having Famagusta and Salamis to yourself before tour groups arrive.
Are there organised day tours from Larnaca to the Troodos mountains?
Yes — several operators run Troodos day trips from Larnaca and Ayia Napa. The standard circuit covers Omodos, Kykkos Monastery, and sometimes Platres. Check that the departure time allows for adequate time at each site.
How do I get to Lefkara without a car?
OSEA runs infrequent bus service from Larnaca to the Lefkara junction on the A1 motorway, from where the village is 2 km. A taxi from Larnaca to Lefkara costs approximately €30–35 one way. An organised day tour combining Lefkara and Choirokoitia is the most practical option for those without a car.
