Larnaca Airport guide: arrivals, transfers, and getting where you're going

What is the best way to get from Larnaca Airport to my hotel?

For Larnaca city: taxi (€15–20, 15 minutes) or OSEA bus (€1.50, 20 minutes). For Ayia Napa: pre-booked transfer or taxi (€35–45, 40 minutes). For Limassol: pre-booked transfer or taxi (€65–80, 45 minutes). For Nicosia: taxi or OSEA bus (€45, 45 minutes). Car rental is at the airport and recommended for flexible travel.

Cyprus’s busiest airport

Larnaca International Airport (IATA: LCA) is the largest and busiest airport in Cyprus, handling approximately 9–10 million passengers per year. It is the main arrival point for international visitors to the island — the majority of non-charter flights into Cyprus land here, along with a substantial volume of charter operations from Northern and Western Europe.

The airport is 4 km south of Larnaca city centre and directly adjacent to Mackenzie Beach — the famous plane-spotting and fish-taverna stretch of coastline. For visitors arriving at Larnaca and heading immediately to Ayia Napa (45 km), Nicosia (45 km), or Limassol (80 km), the airport’s central location is a significant advantage over Paphos Airport for east and centre-bound destinations.

Terminals and layout

Larnaca Airport has a single main passenger terminal building (extended in stages from the 1970s through 2010s). The terminal has:

  • Arrivals: ground floor, with luggage carousels, customs, meeting area, and transport desk.
  • Departures: upper level, with check-in desks, security, and the airside shopping and dining area.
  • Airside: a reasonable selection of shops, cafés, and restaurants in the departure zone. Pre-security food options are limited; if you have a long wait before check-in, the Larnaca seafront (15 minutes by taxi) is better.

Car rental desks: Both in the arrivals hall (for pre-booked collections) and in the car rental centre (a short walk from the terminal, connected by a covered walkway). All major international companies (Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Budget, Enterprise) plus strong local operators (Europcar Cyprus, Alamo Cyprus, various independent firms) operate here.

ATMs: Available in the arrivals hall and airside. The arrivals ATMs dispense euros. Rates are standard interbank; avoid the dynamic currency conversion option if offered.

Tourist information: A Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) desk in the arrivals hall provides maps, brochures, and general orientation information. Staff speak English.

Getting to Larnaca city

By taxi: Immediately outside the arrivals exit. Metered taxis; fare to Larnaca city centre approximately €15–20. Journey time approximately 15 minutes in normal traffic. No negotiation needed — the fare is metered.

By bus: OSEA operates a regular bus service from the airport to Larnaca city bus terminal (Finikoudes area). Frequency approximately every 30 minutes in peak periods. Fare approximately €1.50. Journey time 20–25 minutes.

The bus stop is in front of the terminal building; signs are clear.

Getting to Ayia Napa and Protaras (45–55 km east)

By pre-booked private transfer: the most comfortable and efficient option. Transfer time approximately 35–45 minutes. Cost approximately €30–45 per vehicle (not per person) for a standard car to Ayia Napa. Shared minibus services are available at lower per-person cost.

By taxi: approximately €35–50 from the airport to Ayia Napa, depending on exact destination. Metered. Journey time 35–45 minutes.

By OSEA bus: Bus to Larnaca city centre, then change to the Larnaca–Ayia Napa route. Total journey approximately 90 minutes with the change; cost approximately €3–4. Practical for independent budget travellers with light luggage; less practical with heavy bags or at night.

Private Transfer from Larnaca Airport to Ayia Napa

Getting to Nicosia (45 km north)

By taxi: approximately €45–55. Journey time 40–50 minutes by motorway.

By OSEA bus: The Nicosia–Larnaca airport service runs several times daily and takes approximately 50 minutes. Fare approximately €5. The most cost-effective public transport option for Nicosia.

By car: The A2 motorway runs directly from Larnaca to Nicosia. One of the easiest motorway drives in Cyprus — well-signed, no toll.

Getting to Limassol (80 km west)

By taxi: approximately €65–80. Journey time 45–55 minutes.

By OSEA bus: Bus to Larnaca city terminal, then Larnaca–Limassol intercity service. Total approximately 2 hours. Feasible but slow.

By car: A1 motorway west from Larnaca; straightforward 50-minute drive.

By pre-booked transfer: approximately €65–80 per vehicle, one way.

Larnaca: Private Transfer to/from Larnaca Airport (LCA)

Getting to Paphos (145 km west)

By taxi: approximately €130–150. Journey time approximately 90 minutes. Expensive for a first-day transfer; better to rent a car at the airport and drive.

By OSEA bus: Three-change journey (Larnaca → Nicosia OR Limassol → Paphos). Takes 3–4 hours. Only viable for budget travellers with significant time flexibility.

By car: A1 motorway west, then A6 to Paphos. About 1 hour 40 minutes.

Note: If Paphos is your primary destination, Paphos Airport (50 km from the city) is usually a better arrival point than Larnaca Airport. Larnaca is the right arrival point if you plan to see eastern Cyprus first and head west later in your trip.

Car rental at Larnaca Airport

Car rental at Larnaca Airport is well-organised and competitive. Key considerations:

Booking in advance: Early booking (2–4 weeks before travel) typically saves 30–40% on the walk-up rate. Peak season (July–August) sees price increases and supply tightening — book as early as possible.

Automatic vs manual: Manual transmission is standard in Cyprus; automatics are available at higher cost. Most European visitors manage with manual. US visitors accustomed to automatic should book early.

Driving on the left: Cyprus drives on the left (British colonial heritage). This surprises continental European visitors. The main challenge is at roundabouts and when turning left — the instinct is reversed. Allow a 30-minute adjustment period before attempting complex urban driving.

Full-to-full fuel policy: The most common rental arrangement. Receive the car full, return it full. More economical than the supplier’s fuel option.

Credit card deposit: All rental companies require a credit card (not debit) for the deposit. Amount varies by vehicle class but typically €300–1,000.

Departure tips

Check-in timing: Arrive at Larnaca Airport 2 hours before departure for European destinations, 3 hours for long-haul. The security queues in peak summer (July–August) can be significant.

Airside shopping: Duty-free allowances from Cyprus (EU member) are the standard EU limits. The airside shops carry Cypriot wines, commandaria, Cypriot coffee, loukoumi, and other local products at prices that are not necessarily cheaper than good shops in the city — compare before buying.

Currency: Euros are the currency in the Republic of Cyprus. ATMs at the airport give competitive rates; bureau de change desks give worse rates. If you have leftover euros, they are widely useful across the EU.
